losing browser, but not outlook express

By MdTrackman ·
Windows 2k pro SP4
IE 6
no firewall, McAfee virus software
connecting through 3com adapter to
switch 100 BT cat5:
two other clients, Win98 & Xp no problem
with Verizon DSL link out of switch.
station in question will load mail, browse
for three to five minutes then timeout.
Outlook Express still works.
Need to warm start for browser to come back.

browse no and pop3 yes usually means the computer doesn't have dns. bet your dns settings are screwy somehow...
when this happens (no browse), can you ping your dns server?
maybe would guess you have problem computer set to be dhcp client and you have weird network connectivity problem causing you to lose those settings...i can't actually think of anything that completely explains this...
but bet if you set it to static ip address problem would go away.
i would try ipconfig /release /renew when this happens. post any errors or if that fixes it go looking for wrong media type or virus or spyware or bad nic in xp box...

10q Sarge, but with Verizon DSL connection how could I set static IP? (i know how but would it work?) . Are you saying the Xp client in the workgroup is causing trouble? As stated the 98 client and the NT6 chassis have no connectivity issues. I know that the 2000 pro is using RASPO not the generic WINPOET for PPP.

you are talking about the WAN ip and i am talking about the LAN ip. you want a static ip on the WAN side you gotta pay more and see your isp as your know...you want a static ip on the lan side, you gotta know your subnet, subnet mask, gateway and dns settings...
think i do not understand your question. sorry.

*quote from user mail* ok ...All other computers use RASPPPOE too. When I try to release it says, "All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and can not be released."

if 'we' enable netbios the win2k station 'sees' the rest of the workgroup shares on the Xp box and the 98se; which makes end user doubt the nic is not working right. I have suggested to the user/owner we remove nic and all associated protocols and use the 'new' client software from Verizon for the fresh install.
I appreciate your effort Sarge; I gleaned from user this is the 2nd time this station has lost WAN connectivity (onboard NIC failure) where as no one else in building has trouble.. i say "shoot the user" lol
