Losing Mail Messages

By interpretivewoodwork ·
I have a situation where two users were sharing folders. UserA shared folders with userB. UserB moved forwarded messages from userA's shared folders to his (userB) new directory structure. When userB deleted the shared folder from his account, all read messages disappeared, and continue to do so if he opens unread mail. Can this mail be recovered? How do I prevent this from continuing. Can users not share forwarded mail?

First I'm assuming you are talking about GroupWise. What version?

Also, are you sure the read messages have been deleted? You can set your view in GroupWise such that all you see are the unread messages. If the messages are not in the trash folder, then they still exist.

I am also assuming that this is GroupWise. If the mail still exists in the system somewhere, find out the FID of the user that wants the mail restored. Rename their USRXXX.DB file (XXX being the FID). Run a rebuild using GWcheck. You will get an error 30 saying the database can't be found, (because you just renamed it). It will recreate the user message base from the message stores. If the messages are restored (and even if they aren't) mark the shared folders as READ ONLY.
Hope that helps.

Yes,this is GW5.5 I have since found that userA had shared folders with multiple users, and with at least the one (userB),he had for some reason forwarded his messages to himself to share with userB. Then userB used a c3po and mass forwarded these same messages to a new directory structure in his(userB) mailbox.

I also have successfully used the FID Editor to unarchive mail from usera into userC mail. When I tried the same with userB (he still had the forwarded mail from the previous attempt), the end result looked identical except that when he attempted toopen any mail from the newly unarchived mail, all the opened mail in all the folders seemingly dissapered again.

Sounds like there is a corrupted link in his shared folders. Have the user stop sharing all/all folders. Then run a cleanup of his mailbox database. You might want to do a structure check first, then a content check. Once that is done have the user share one folder. See what happens. If you have too much sharing of personal folder I've seen problems. Also, is one of the people he is sharing a folder across a WAN link? That has caused problems also and not necessariyly with the person across the WAN link.

Over looked by me, even though I had asked the user if he was auto-archiving and he had said no, He was. All the mail as soon as it was opened (since he set it to archive mail older than 30 days, and all the mail was)was being sent to his archive which I eventually found out. Thanks for the help any way.
