Loss of Memory

By ljackson.desoto ·
I have a couple of computers running WIN98 SE that constantly "lose" memory. As you open and close programs the memory is not released and eventually the computer freezes or has to be re-booted because it has gotten too slow. It is an AMD 1.3G processor and the new motherboard. Any suggestions to improve performance?

Thank You

You can download a memory manager from CNET or ZDNET. THey will free used RAM when a user specified minimum is reached. MemTurbo for one.

You should also run a spyware check for background applications. You can download ADAWARE at http://www.lavasoft.nu
You'll probably find lots of unexpected goodies running along in the background.

Memory leaks develop for a number of reasons on W98 PCs.

My first 2 suspects are IE6 and DirectX9.

This depends a lot on the video card and driver.

How much RAM is installed?

Windows 98 does have a problem with more than 511MB of RAM installed.

The only true 'fix' that I have found for Windows memory leaks is a clean fresh install, and not loading as many programs.
