Loss of network connectivity (Very Hot!

By Jeffrey Czapla ·
I have been having this problem for about a week now. I have a Windows NT 4.0 member server, with SP 4. Installed protocols are IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, and NetBEUI- which is not bound to the NIC (only to RAS). I also have a multiport card for remote access. My problem is that the server losses connectivity to the network speraticaly if I reboot the server it fixes itself for a short amount of time. I would appreciate an answer ASAP seeing that this is effecting our ability to do our work. Will awardmore points for quick answers.

Loss of network connectivity (Very Hot!

Look at the addresses you are giving out to RAS callers. My guess is that they are addresses on your network, or you are allowing RAS users to specify an IP, and at least one of them is specifying an address on your network.

I suspect what is happening is that when a user with an address on your network disconnects, you are losing the route to the rest of your network.

Things to try:
1. Put a static route to your network, pointing at your own IP address. (This is there by default, but may stick better if you explicitly put it in.)
2. Give out non-routable addresses to RAS clients, and put a static route in your gateway router pointing to that subnet via your vpn server.
3. If you have valid addresses to burn, create a subnet with valid addresses, give those out to RAS clients, and put the static route to the vpn server in the gateway router.

Good luck.
