Loss of proxy checkmark

On a couple of my systems, I lose the checkmark for the proxy setting when the P.C. is shutdown at night. The proxy IP and port setting stays but the checkmark does not. The O/S is Windows NT 4.0 service pack 6. The Internet browser is IE5.5 sp1.Does anybody have an idea what would cause this and how I could fix it.
