Lost COM2 port

Anyone have any ideas on how to reconnect to a missing COM port. The PC in question had a problem connecting to the internet, during the attempt to diagnos the problem the modem was disconnected from the COM2 port. Since then all attempts to reconnect to the COM2 port have been unsuccessful. In fact it is not listed as an option. The PC in question is a Compaq desktop running Windows 98 second edition.
