Lost Machine Accounts when Creating Domain

We will be transitioning a production environment (online ASP service) to a Domain from a Workgroup. On a test server, when I created the domain, I lost the ability to have local machine user accounts. The log shipping and backup services are constantly running and depend on these accounts.

Is there a way to not lose the machine user accounts when enabling a domain until I properly transition each service to use the new domain user account?
