lost space on my harddrive

I am fairly new to computers so I would apreciate some info.
I recently bought a 40 gig harddrive. When I came to patitioning it, fdisk said it was only 38 gig. After partitioning to two drives, they both only added up to just over 37 gig. Why is this and have I done something wrong?
