Low resolution boot up

By hiland76 ·
I've got a Celeron 500mHz, 128 mb RAM, using Win 98se and a 3dfx voodoo 3 2000.
For a good while now my computer will every now and then boot up in 640 x 480 even though I run in 1024 x 768. Now it's doing the same thing but sometimes when I restart i get a "windows caused a general protection fault" message and it shuts down. When I reboot it boots in Safe mode and I must manually reset all my graphics settings. After doing this all seems to be fine until about 2 or 3 shutdowns later whenit happens again. Any suggestions are appreciated!

It looks like a display driver mismatch problem.Pl check for the proper driver of the display card.

I have had this same thing happen to me at one point. I would recommend removing all the software for the card i.e tools, drivers, etc. I would then follow the steps accordingly for reinstalling EXCEPT REBOOTING. I would remove the software and tools first. Then I would go into Device Manager and remove the display adapter (your Voodoo Card) and also your monitor. After this is done I would go to add hardware and choose the device , not letting windows search for you, then choose that you have disk. After this dont restart but install the 3dfx tools. Only when this is done properly will this stop. I would then reboot your machine, windows will find the monitor and you should restart again.

Good Luck, Let me know how it goes.

I also forgot to mention that you should obtain the latest drivers. 3dfx is now out of buisness but still have drivers on their page, hurry though who knows when/if Nvidia will offer support. 3dfx sold to them.
