Low system resources

By Net_Tech ·
After using recovery disk from Dell to do clean install of the sytem on a GX240 we noticed the sytem resources are extremely low. Sytem has 128 MB RAM with only 13.6 MB available.

NO other programs installed. I then installed Office XP and rebooted. As I open different programs the system resource level changes to 17MB, then 33.2 MB and down to 11 MB.

What is happening? I thought I understood resources but am now not quite sure.

Are you shure you are refering to the system resources and not the available memory. System resources typically refers to Avilability of the first 640Kb of RAM. if you are talking about available memory this is the amount of free RAM that is set aside by the OS so that applications resident in ram can effectively utilize the Page(swap) file.

Actually you are right Chris. This is the amount of available memory. Not virtual but available. Is this just a set aside amout that can be ignored?

I believe you will have nothing but trouble with only 128MB RAm. I routinely use 512MB RAM as minimum for XP Pro installs and 1GB for power users.

You probably will hear continuous access of your hard drive to access more RAM rhan you have supplied.
