lower (NOT disable!) system beep volume

By EStreetJerseyGirl ·
Is there a way to lower (NOT disable!!) the system beep volume on a Compaq DeskPro computer? It's running Windows NT 4.0. I need to hear the beep, I'd just prefer it to be quieter. Thanx!

Adjust the 'PC Speaker' volume control using volume control applet, or through control panel 'Sounds and Multimedia'.

Some PCs have a volume adjustment in the BIOS setup screen (typically F10 key at startup on many Compaqs).

If you are referring to a separate case speaker or buzzer, the easy way to reduce the volume is to place layers of tape over the speaker until the sound is low enough for your needs.

If the sound comes through the system speakers, then you need to reduce the basic volume level.

You might be able to turn down the master volume for the speakers and raise the volume in mixer panel to compensate.

I don't need to lower the speaker volume, I'm referring to the beep that the computer makes when, for example, you have a low battery warning. It's not controlled by the regular volume controls.

If you can open the case you can put something soft like cotton or tissue between the speaker metal support and the fiber of the speaker. Be sure to turn off the computer and be vary carefull with the speaker.

That's what I thought you were referring to.

The motherboard speaker usually has NO volume control. But, some systems do use the normal speakers for this function.

You need to open the case and find the speaker. Most of the time, they are small piezo devices.

It might be on the motherboard, or mounted to the front of the case.

Find the open hole, and place a piece of tape over the hole. The more and denser the tape, the more you will quiet the sound.
