By OldER Mycroft ·
M$ Software Distribution Service 3.0.

On reboot I had zero internet connection, nothing at all. System Restore brought it back.

Anyone else?

Not that particular problem

But a co-worker reported an MS update this week to his Vista physical system caused his XP virtual machine to BSOD when booting. He SysRest'ed the Vista host and the XP guest came back up. He's still narrowing down which of four patches caused the problem.

There is a known issue with one patch

There is a known issue with one patch that addresses a DNS vulnerability that will kill internet for any system running ZoneAlarm. The solution is to download (ha ha) a newer patched version of ZoneAlarm, or remove the M$ patch.

Rather deeply buried I might add, within the depths of KB links-to-links-to-links:

As you pointed out, what the **** is the point in notifying users on the M$ site, they should be outputting the info within the update blurb, so you could download the patch before invoking the upload.

Typical M$.

The patch doesn't work.

The ZoneAlarm patch appears to be incompatible with ZoneAlarm.

Why does that not surprise me ?

Set ZA security from HIgh to Medium and this will get you around the issue.

Nope. Not in my case....

Still, not to worry, it won't be the first M$ update I ultimately chose to avoid.

Do you run Zone Alarm?
IF so one of the MS patches this week caused an issue ZA. If so turn your security setting in ZA from High to Medium and that will fix it.
