?Mac and Win networking question…help!

by crecens . Updated 24 years, 2 months ago

Okay,

I have a Mac G4 OS 9.1 and a Gateway Win98
that I am trying to home network through a
Linksys hub (5 port workthrough). As far as i
know the hub is not a router, but I have
successfully networked macs and pcs with
this hub twice in the past.

My current problem is that now, with both the
computers connected via ethernet to the hub,
and the hub connected to the High-speed
cable modem (Motorola Surfboard sb4101),
only one computer at a time can log into the
Internet.

It looks as if whichever computer is the first to
power up will grab the IP directly from the
modem (through the hub) and block the other
computer. What can i do to assign individual
IPs to the two computers from the Hub? How
doI configure the DHCP for the Mac and the
windows machines?

I have previously networked the same G4 with
a Dell running WinXP and a Viao running
Win2000. The hub routed fine with those
computers, although the Dell and Viao and
Mac couldnot all be on at once or the Viao and
Mac would have the same problems I am
having now. Oddly enough, when either the
Dell or Viao was removed from the network,
both the remaining computer the mac worked
fine.

The Linksys help people say that what i have
done simply cannot be done, but i have a hard
time buying that, now that i have done it twice
before on both cable and DSL connections. I
have done this twice before these times with a
Linksys router and Win98 machines.

I want to add a Mac TiBook to the network
inthe future, but I’d at least like to get these two
computers working off the same hub first!

Can anyone help me or offer suggestions?
