    Mac Files on NT Fileserver

    Locked

    by jw01234 ·

I have an old Macintosh file that shows up several times on my NT 4.0 sp5 file server. Whenever I try to delete it or any of the parent folders, I get a message: Cannot delete, paramater is incorrect. The file name is “PRN”.

    Any hints?

    Thanks
    Jeff

Windows NT Server doesn’t like file names that end in periods or spaces. When Mac users copy files ending in periods or spaces to an NT server, Windows clients connected to the server won’t be able to access them. The same is true for file names that are the same as PC ports. These include:

com1 thru com9, lpt1 thru lpt9, con, nul, and prn
Most of the times in the past I had to rename these files, but that is almost impossible to do.
I have used this web site http://www.macwindows.com/index.html

Here is the software I use Mac Explorer:

Can you rename the file and delete it?

Try a deltree command and see if that will
take care of it. Also, assuming you are
using File services for mac, stop the service
in the services control panel, and then try
      and delete it.

      Good luck.

PRN is a “Reserved File Name” in NT. Chekc out Q120716 which explains how to use the Posix subsystem (built into NT) to remove these files.

      Hope this helps
