Macbook Air screen brightness auto adjustment not working

I am pretty sure that my Macbook Air (mid 2012) adjusted screen brightness depending on the ambient light. It must have done it by sensing it through the camera or a sensor nearby. However, that no longer works now. Anybody got any ideas?

What's the battery like.

The obvious thing is if the battery is going off it's no longer keeping a full charge and as a result is dimming the screen to save power and extend the life that it runs while on battery.

Could also be the Power Settings which have been modified to give the longest run time possible on battery as Screen brightness shortens the time that it can run on battery.

If the Power Settings have been changed from their default it could also affect how the unit work on Mains Power.
