Machine shutting down

By tashinga ·
I have a Windows 2000 Pro machine which just shuts down once I plugin the network cable. As long as the network cable is unplugged it keeps running fine. What causes this?

Safe mode won't load the NIC

Safe mode, you may as well have the cable unplugged, this would defeat the purpose wouldn't it?

Unless you choose 'safe mode with network support.'
