Machine will not boot at all! help!

by randeec . Updated 16 years, 6 months ago

Last June I installed the Win7 RC on my C: over an installation of XP pro.
While I had an XP pro on drive D: as well.
After a while, the machine itself would randomly shut off. Then it started not booting.
I noticed the System drive was on d: while the boot.ini was on c:.
I was told that if I force formatted C: while logged into the XP on D: and restarted, it would rewrite the boot.ini on C: and then start over.

I did so and all seemed to work well for several hours until the machine shut off on its own.
Now it will not boot from the D: or CD.
I either get the NTLDR is missing, so I tried to reinstall XP using my back up copy of XP (original disk is 8 years old and no longer works) only to get a System Disk Failure message.

My guess is there’s something awry with the CMOS.

C: is a 120 gb ATA drive on channel0 while D: is a 1tb SATA on Channel2

What the heck is going on?
