    Macintosh and DHCP server?

    Locked

    by rsears ·

I have a W2K server configured as a DHCP server and a router to the Internet for my network, it also has services for Macintosh installed and working; all PC clients can connect to the Internet through it. I also have a MAC client (OS 8.x) that I would like to connect to it getting it?s IP from the DHCP server. What steps do I need to perform on the MAC so that I can accomplish this goal? The MAC is currently configured with AppleTalk. Can I continue to use this protocol so that my printing andAppleTalk volumes work? Or should I stop using it and use TCP/IP only? I am not much of a MAC expert so be as explicit as possible. I have tried to configure my MAC to obtain an IP from the DHCP server but every time it locks up on me. What am I doing wrong? Help!

Do these steps in this order and see if it
      still locks up…

The AppleTalk control panel must be set
      to connect via Ethernet.

The TCP/IP control panel must be set to
      connect via Ethernet, configure using
DHCP Server, and if you click the Options
button on the TCP/IP control panel, be
sure TCP/IP is active, and that load only
      when needed is not selected.

If it’s setup this way, and still locks up –
maybe there’s a problem with the
Ethernet port in the computer – or some
sort of OS problem making it lock up
during the switch from AppleTalk to
      Ethernet.

You (they) will have to switch between
AppleTalk and Ethernet in order to
continue to print to an AppleTalk printer.
Sort of a pain – but maybe you could
consider other printing options so they
don’t have to switch. Without further
details on the Mac, printer, etc. – I can’t
offer too much more specific advice on
      alternatives.

      Good luck!

Like the last suggestion, configure as described. If its locks up, start eliminating 3rd party extensions. In the extensions manager you can go back to OS 8.x base set if needed.

You should defintely use TCP/IP (this works in conjunction with theAppletalk protocol) Your printing will not be affected.

      Good luck!

I have several labs of macs that connect to my NT4 server. You will need to configure the macs as the other responses stated. Also, you might want to list the ip address of your dns servers under Search Domains on the apple tcp/ip control. This can fix some problems. If you’ve recently installed the services for macintosh, make sure you run the latest service pack on the server.
Still, even with all this configured correctly, your macs may experience lockups. I also had several that just didn’t want to work. Eventually, I just reserved a few ip’s on the DHCP server and manually assigned them to the macs. E-mail me if you want this proceedure.

As the other answers stated, configure your Mac’s TCP/IP control panel to connect via Ethernet and Using a DHCP server. Your Appletalk control panel should be configured to connect via AppleTalk.

Your Mac’s shouild connect to the W2K server via TCP/IP autotmatically if you are using a recent version of the Mac OS. If you are using older ones, then install the Appleshare Client Updater.

Since your Mac appears to be locking up, I woiuld suggest trashing your TCP/IP preferences that are located in the Preferences folder. Start with the shift key held down, then trash the TCP/IP prefs file then restart normally. You will need to setup the TCP/Ip control panel after restarting though.

Your Mac’s should be able to see the NT Mac volumes and print without any having to switch things around.

If the above items do not work, feel free to contact me.

      Hi,
Firstly, You should check whether the ethernet adapter of the MAC is working properly.
If the first step is ok, the rest is easy.
I have a mix network PC & Mac connected to the W2000 Server. They are running properly in the Network ( including access to the internet and sharing files on the Server, etc )
to be able help you, I am giving the setting used in our Network is working without any problem in each Mac.
Connection path : should be Ethernet
      Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Gateway address : should be the IP address of the DHCP Server ( or W2000 Server if there exists one server in the Network )

If you want to ask more questions, dont hesitate.

      good luck.
