I recently installed Office 2002 on a Windows XP machine. Every time I open Word, a message pops up telling me I need to enable macros. What does this mean and how do I enable macros?

SUMMARY
Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Word 2002. This update includes improvements that were developed as a direct result of customer error reports. This update also prevents Word from running macros without warning because the userhas opened a document that has been maliciously modified. Once you have installed this update, you will still be able to use templates, macros in templates, or RTF documents with macros.

This article describes how to download and install the Word 2002 Update: June 21, 2001.

NOTE: This Public Update is part of the Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1), but for your convenience the Public Update also is available individually, as described in the "More Information" section of this article. If you already applied Office XP SP-1, you do not need to apply this Public Update.

The reason the message pops up is because there is a document/Template or Add-inn that contains a macro in your start up path. Look in Startup and Tools>Options.
You should not, in most circumstances, see this message when you start Word.
