Macs, Eudora (email), and SMPT error

By trule ·
This is a WEIRD one!
We host our own email/DNS servers (linux
boxes).
I have a wide variety of Macs on campus,
ranging from OS 8.1 to 9.2.2. We've rolled out
several new iMacs in the last month, most
running Eudora 3.x.
Most of the machines will send/receive email
just fine. I have a few (3 at the moment) that
cannot send email off-campus.

When they try to send email off-campus, they
get this message (paraphrased):
"The domain blahblah is unacceptable to your
SMPT server".
Eudora 5 mentions something about "relaying
not allowed".

I have several machines with the same setup
that work!!!!

Thus far have 2 machine with 9.2.2 with this
problem, and 1 running 8.1 or 8.6 that just
started having it last week.Once the problem
appears, it appears consistently.

My current workaround - change Eudora to
use my "list" machine as the SMTP
server.....but I shouldn't have to do this!

Since most machines CAN send out, I think
there isn't a SMPT server config
problem....right?

Entourage works jsut fine...this only shows up
for Eudora users.

Ideas on the problem/procedure for finding the
problem/a fix?

What is the exact error message you get? What version are you using?

Go to the Search section at the top of the page and enter Relay in the search box with Tech Q&A as the source. Several pertinent articles there. It is probably a router setting or an SMTP server setting.

It was indeed some routing settings in the SMTP server
settings. i don't know the specific setting, since this is
someone else's area.

I saw this same error at a previous job, and the problem was with the DNS entries for the Macs getting the error. We had tightened up our network security and our SMTP server would only send email out for i.p. addresses that it recognized as ours. When a network admin made a typo entering the i.p.'s in the DNS tables for a couple of the Macs (out of hundreds that he did), the SMTP server thought that the email was being relayed from the outside instead of being sent by an authorized user on our network (it didn't care about email that stayed within our network). Have whoever sets up the DNS for your network check on the entries for the Macs that are having problems.

We'd already thought about that - turns out not to be the
problem. Thanks though!
