Mail backup in outlook express
Lockedby sbn20002001 · about 19 years ago
Please, I’ll like to find out where outlook express stores it’s mails. What do I need to do in order to backup mails received in Outlook Express such that when I format and reinstall the computer, I can restore the mails? If there’s some special way I need to restore the mails, I’ll appreciate it very much.

to find the folder where your OE mail is stored (if you use OE profiles, there will be one folder for each profile):
in Outlook Express, pick tools/options/maintenance tab/store folder
write down the long strange name, then search for it using windows explorer…
you can also do export/import of your mail messagess and addresses…-

to put it back, you copy it to the new computer, then use the Store Folder button to ‘tell’ the new OE where it is…

Here is a link to a backup program for OE.
http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx
Outlook Express stores your messages in a series of .dbx files.
There will be 1 dbx file for each folder in OE plus 1 more.
The default location varies by the version of OE and Windows.
For 2000 and XP the default location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\{User Name}\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook ExpressFor Windows 98, the default path is similar to:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Identities\{a string}\You will need to back up your address book separately.

it is a lot easier to make a pst file and save it.That way you will be saving all your e-mail files. The way to do it is click on “File” then select “Import and Export tab ” then select “Export to a file ” then “Personal file (pst)” hight light the mailbox you wanna back up and check also to include sub folder , and then look for a location you wanna save the file.Bear in mind also not to select with encryption for easier restoration.
To restore it back you could do it by importing instead of exporting.Good luck
