Mail Merge main document

By mkfME ·
I've somehow converted a user's Word document into a mail merge "main document" in the process of trying to figure out why her labels were printing in a larger font than her document was formatted in. Now when we try to use the document in a merge,we get a message saying we can't because it's a mail merge "main document." How can I make this file useable in mail merge again, and why would it print in a larger font than it should? I tried saving as a different file name and copy/pasting the data into a new file - neither works. Thanks!

To restore a document, go to Tools>Mail Merge
Click the Create button and choose Restore to Normal Word Document.
Look at the formating by toggling the abc icon on the toolbar. Check to see how the fields are formatted. Highlight the field and hitShift+F9 the field should look like this:

{MERGEFIELD Title \*MERGEFORMAT}

This answer solved half the problem - how to convert a MM main document back to a regular Word doc. The second part of the question is why does the MM process print the labels in a different font size than specified in the main doc?

The second part is:
Check to see how the fields are formatted. Highlight the field and hit Shift+F9 the field should look like this:

{MERGEFIELD Title \*MERGEFORMAT}

From the Help file:
"Note If you update a field, formatting you apply directly to the field results may be lost. To retain the formatting, include the \* MERGEFORMAT switch in the field code. Microsoft Word includes this switch if you insert a field by using the Field command on the Insert menu and select the Preserve formatting during updates check box."
