Mail Notification in Terminal Server

By skenny ·
I am currently running a Windows 2000 Terminal Server. I have several client PC's running NT 4.0 and Win2k Workstation They are running the terminal services and some local applications. They spend most of the time in a local application, but getmail through Outlook in the Terminal session. My problem is there is no notification if they get mail. Because the TS is minimized there is no way for them to know if they have recently received mail or not. What I need is any way for them to be notified that they have received mail. This can include the minimized session flashing in the taskbar or anything that would let them know they have mail.
Thank you for any ideas or information in solving this problem.

Shane

Mail Notification in Terminal Server

Shane,
Because the TS session, and all apps. in the session, are running remotely, there is no way to send a notification to the local desktop. Keep in mind, a TS session only transmits the video data - no other data transfer is happening. The only solution is to purchase a third party product that could monitor the mailboxes for new messages and send a broadcase, or other type of message, to the user (or, your developers might be able to write this app. for you). To date, though, I have found no package that can do that.

Good luck.
Chris

Shane,

As an afterthought to my last answer, you could put the Outlook client on the local desktop, and take it out of Terminal Services. That way, the notification features would work.
