Mailbox size

I am running exch5.5 sp3,and my problem is there are a number of users who have deleted all the mail(contacts,sent items,calendar everything in the inbox)but from the mailbox resources it still shows that ther are some mail.What can be causing this???

There is a known issue with this that is reportedly fixed in Service Pack 4 - the details can be found on Technet (article Q259675).

If the mailboxes contained a large amount of information then you may have to perform an offline defragmentation.
The ESEUTIL command can be used to perform this operation. However before running this command it is advisable that a backup must first be done and the information store service must be stopped.

To defragment the private information store perform the following:
eseutil /d /ispriv

To defragment the public information store perform the following:
eseutil /d /ispub

Sometime journaling is turned on. This feature integrates with the other office apps. and can cause a lot of unwanted items to be stored.
