Maintain Config & Reinstall Windows 2000

By techytype ·
Motherboard failure. Need to reinstall Windows 2000 Pro. Does someone know of a method allowing me to maintain existing software configuration, accounts, etc. on existing install? Cannot boot into Windows to run sysprep with new motherboard, unable to locate same chipset motherboard to replace failed one.

Hi,

Not a guaranteed method, but you can simply boot using your new motherboard and old disk and have Win2K prompt for any new drivers as it boots.

If it wont boot (As above) then try safe mode.

If that still doesn't work, then re-install Win2K into another area of your disk (preferably another partition but another directory should do), leaving the original intact. This wont mean you can necessarily use all your original software but you'll have access to all your old data and be ableto move it somewhere safe if you decide to re-build again from scratch.

Cheers,
Tim.
