Things that you do to try and keep your system in peak performance. Erasing temp directory items, *.tmp files, scandisking, defragging, regcleaning.
Also opening the case and blowing it out with compressed air or carfully vacuuming, I would not recommend the latter unless your vacuum is not to powerful and you're very careful how you use it. Degaussing the screen, and running a number of selftests on the pc fixing the problems that arise.

There are 2 types of maintenance:

Catastrophic / repair where you wait for something to break and then fix it.

And, Preventative Maintenance.
With PM, you predict what tasks need to be performed to keep things running so that they are available for normal useage without interruption.

Some specific tasks:
Hardware: Fans, drives, vent filters
Software: Updates, removal of unneeded files
