    Make a Maxtor drive a slave

    by dkv-j ·

    Long story: to cut short, I have my data on a 13GB Maxtor 91361U3 HDD. I am adding a Seagate Barracuda ATA ii 30GB HDD, and want to make it the master so I can completely reinstall a troublesome NT4 OS. The Seagate has pin connections marked on the body, and I presume I’ll need to jumper it as as Master with a non ATA compatible slave.
    But what is the jumpering on the Maxtor to make it a slave? It has a 9 pin rectangular socket, pair 1 open, pair 2 jumpered, pair 3 open, single 4 open, pair5 open.
    Thanks for any help.

      Found at http://www.maxtor.com. Click on Diamond Max Technical Support, then Common Q&A, then under IDE click on the Info link. Then click on Diamond Max VL 20 Value Line, then Full Specs. (Sorry for all the steps. I tried to cut and paste url but it didn’t work. I tried to cut and paste specs, came out garbled.)

      Basically, the first jumper on the left, j50, should be open to make it a slave in a dual drive system.
      Hope it helps!

        Wait, but you say J50 is already open? That’s odd. The spec sheet shows the default as closed in a single drive system or as a master. Better check that link carefully.

        Gave me the site with information I needed, tried to assist, and recognised the discrepancy between the actual jumper seting and the spec sheet. Thanks.

      The following link shows your jumper settings. Looks to me like you only need to pull the existing jumper on J50 to make it a slave.

        Sorry, J50 wasn’t marked on the drive, it was completely unmarked as regards the config socket.

      Here’s an idea, take the above suggestions and try it!. It will either work or it won’t. It will not blow up your computer or destroy the drives. Experiment, explore…learn from your mistakes. If the documentation is confusing you, try some of the jumper positions. And just a note, this stuff is not written in stone. Specs change, written factory defaults are not always what you really get. You must learn to adapt the information for your current situation.

        Thanks for trying, but I have been trying to get a configuration working for six months… intimated that when I said ‘cutting a long story short’. I suspect my trying a lot of solutions was apparent from the nature of the question.

      J50 on= master
      off= slave
      J48= drive select
      J46= cyl limit
      J44 & 42= not used
