Making AD work with XP

By wroming ·
My question is simple, it just seems I am having trouble finding the answer. I am wanting to install and run the AD console from an XP pro machine. In Windows 2000 all I have to do is install the adminpak.msi and I can remotly manage AD from a workstation. But, the problem I am running into is that the adminpak.msi or windows2000 Server CD does not work with XP pro. So what do I need to do to get it to work. I know that it can be done, I just can not remember how. :-(

Also, if you know what the answer is post it to Techrepublic, and I will give you the points. But, also if you could email me directly with the answer I would greatly appriciate it. My email address is wroming@ci.killeen.tx.us thanks a bunch!

I agree with pvisnicky.
If you go to the page mentioned in Answer 1 above (remove the spaces in the URL) you will find that this AdminPak is designed for Windows XP with service pack 1 (or Windows XP and a specific "extra" fix).

It works well on XP. I run it everyday. It even has a few features (like drag and drop capability) that the 2000 version does not have.

I run XP Pro and I have the Admin tools loaded on my laptop. It came with XP Pro SP1 preinstalled.
Now, the Adminpak.MSI IS included on your XP CD, in the i386 folder. There is a cabinet file called ADMINPAK.EXE
Double-click that to extract ADMINPAK.MSI
Then do the install of the tools.
There is also a TXT file that will extract from the EXE that states the following:

The AdminPak.msi file will ONLY install on
1. Windows XP Professional build 2600 with QFE Q329357 or
2. Windows XP Professional SP1 or
3. Windows Server 2003

So, make sure you have SP1 or that patch listed instead. Then just get the file of your XP CD, and run it.

hope this helps

Oh yeah, one more thing. Like it has been said previously, the Win2K Admin Pack is NOT compatible with XP. It won't even install. So just go with the XP copy on your CD.
