Making Child DC the main DC

By renny ·
I have a Domain Controller with 2 child DC. Now I want to disconnect the main DC and leave the 2nd installed child DC as the main DC. What are the steps that I need to take?

You will promote the CHild DC to a Global Catalog server and wait for it to update. Then you will demote and turn off the main DC.

I can't find the MS KB article, but this may help: http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/10825_1468591_2

Thank you,
You pointed me in the right direction. Only I think on serverwatch they already removed the article, because I couldn't get to it.

You'll need to seize all the roles from the main DC before you can take offline. The roles will be transferred to your child DC, hence making it the main one.

You can use the GUI to do that, but here's an article that shows you how to do it using the command prompt. Probably better that way.

Thank you more,
Answer number 1 missed the KB number, but still pointed me in the right direction. But yours I think is right on. I didn't check it yet, but I'm almost sure. In the past I moved a catalog server to accomodate Exchange 2000 on a different DC
