I have a 19 gig drive, I am currently using 3 gig of the drive. Would my preformance improve if I partition my c: drive to 5 gig?

Disks always perform better when they have free space, yet they perform better if their files are not fragmented and the cluster size is optimized for the disk space, the disk has faster time reading when placed in a single line of clusters.Defrag thedrive once a month. You donot want to allow files to start fragmenting over the free space.

Thank you for your comments, yes I do defrag but I needed to know if my preformance would improve if I partitioned.

I would say probably not. As another answer noted, fragmentation slows a drive down but typically fragmentation occurs within the occupied part of the drive only so unless you are in the habit of frequently creating and then erasing multi-gig files, the fragmentation will occur within the 3gigs you use rather than scattering files all over the 19gigs.

Definitely get a defrag utility. Symantec puts out a program called Norton Utilities that does wonders for disk read/write performance when optimized regularly. I would not create a drive larger than 2-3 Gig for the C drive. Only store necessary Windows files and OS stuff on the C drive. Store all other file/apps on the other drive(s).

Thank you, I do have Norton Utilities and I will follow your advice.
