Managing unstructured data

Not all data within an enterprise exists in a nice structured database; often very important data exists in an unstructured form that is not easily retrieved. To retrieve data residing outside the structured environment and present it in a useable form requires a new generation of text mining tools that go beyond mere data mining.

Developing strategies for managing unstructured data seems nearly impossible. What strategies has your organization implemented for retrieving data from sources other than the database system?
