    Mandatory profiles

    Locked

We have 9 PCs using a mandatory profile. For several months the programs on the start menu worked fine. Suddenly, some (but not all) of the programs are giving an error message that the shortcut link cannot be found. These programs are all installedlocally. Checking the profile, I noticed that all of the shortcuts link to one of the PCs directly. The only way I could fix the problem was to have the shortcut link of the problem programs point to the server itself. However, other programs workfine! Why would this happen all of a sudden?

I’m not sure what the exact nature of your shortcut error is, but I did encounter a problem with shortcuts when I created my own mandatory profile some months ago. I had stolen a start menu from another machine and tried to use it on the template machine I was creating. (I use Norton Ghost to distribute my standardized systems.) The problem I encountered was that the shotcuts couldn’t find the local app they were linked to even though the app was there. It turned out that the shortcut in some way knew it was on a different machine and was trying to resolve a link back to it’s original system. Two solutions I found were to either create a fresh new shortcut right on the machine in question, or to use a little utility to edit the shortcut itself. I don’t remember the name of the utility but I found it on the JSI Inc. site.
Hop in there, go the registry hacks section and do a search for shortcut stuff. You should find something pertaining to this.
http://www.jsiinc.com It’s an extrememly useful site.
