Manufacturing Background = IT Future ???

by rob . Updated 24 years, 8 months ago

I have four years experience in manufacturing and a BS in Chemical Engineering. I also have a BS in Marketing. I am losing my job as an Engineer for a paper company because of a site closure, and in case anyone didn’t notice, paper mills are few and far between in Mass.

I have promised myself that I am staying in Massachusetts. To help with this I am investigating IT training through one of the many colleges offering certification programs. I really like programming and want to get into client server/web development. As part of the program I am looking into I will be learning JavaScript, ActiveX, ColdFusion, HTML and other apps.

The $10,000 question is what are the opportunities for me. I understand that there are lots of outof work programmers, but I am hoping that there are companies out there that recognize that I have a unique background. Is there anybody out there that can tell me if there are jobs that require both an engineering background and programming knowledge?

Thanks
