map drives with overseas user

By fcc ·
I work for a large company and we have offices overseas. My local user wants to share files on his Win 98 machine to the NT user overseas. We are all part of the same domain where we are a.b.abc.com, and they are abc.com. I probable can use ftp but none of the users have this program and I can't purchase any. I have an ascend dial in box, but then my user in China will be paying big bucks for dial in access. What do I do, VPN, FTP (what with Exceed 6.x).

Users are on different subnets of course but all are part of the abc.com domain.
Thanks
Frank

If you have an NT server which can be made to be accessable to the internet, you could use ftp. The server capability exists in IIS, which is included with NT, and the client is included in all Windows 9x, NT and 2000. If you do this be very carefulto only expose a limited number of directories, and use passwords, not anonymous. You may want to create accounts which ONLY are used for ftp so as to minimize exposure of passwords on the internet.

Exceed has an ftp client in it (at least the NTversion).

VPN is a good solution IF your access to the internet is not through Proxy, and if you have an NT server at the China site which can be set up with RRAS so that your other sites can connect with it. If you have a server at each site youcan connect the servers with VPN links and set up routing which is transparant to the users.

Using the Ascend box is, as you say, very very expensive.

Another possibility you may not have thought of is to use xdrive.com or a similar site whichoffers you disk storage on the net. This is a no-effort solution. You can trade files using only a browser. Personal space is free, business space is not too expensive. The downside is that you are trusting xdrive with your files, but if you encryptbefore uploading that should not be too much risk.

Good luck.
