Map server drive from a remote location

By theav ·
With Novell 4.11 through TCP/IP, is it possible to map a drive on the server from home? Whenever I use \\servername\\drivename, I receive an error that "The network name is either incorrect, or on a network to which you do not have full access". Someone told me it was impossible to do this... is that correct?

How exactly are you connecting to the server from home? You could setup a VPN between your PC at home and the server using a product such as BorderManager. This would create a secure encrypted tunnel across the Internet to the server and allow you access to all network resources, including mapping a drive.

It is not possible with a 4.11 server even if you had a hardware vpn eg intell lan rover because internetware dosent have actual tcp/ip protocol it uses a novell form of it in order to use a vpn you will have to upgrade the server to 5.x for true tcp/ip and use a vpn box or firewall this is important because if you can get to it then others can get to it you dont want that

Regarding my connection from home: My ISP is AT&T @Home, and I've got the Novell Client installed on my PC. As I'm not a network "techie", I'm not sure if this is sufficient information, but will be glad to provide more specific information if I know what is needed.

This has been answered but more info for you. NW4.11 doesn't support pure TCPIP client access but you could use NWIP which encapsulates IPX inside an IP datagramme and routes it through the IP network . NWIP came with IntraNetware and it does work but its a bit tricky to setup . The best solution is to install NW5.X which has true TCPIP support but make sure your firewall if used , will allow the port through
