Mapped drives in XP

By kevin ·
I am having a problem getting mapped drives to remember the password to the share on XP. I have mapped the drive and told it to use another user and password and reconnect at logon but it will will not reconnect. When I click on the share to open it I get a dialog box that has the correct username. I then enter the password and the share opens and is good until logout. I have also stored usernames and passwords under manage network passwords but this does not work. It has worked on past workstations but not on these new ones. It does work on the mapped printers though. The only way I can get these mapped drives to connect is to make the workstations password the sames as the mapped drive password.

Thanks,
Kevin

Wouldn't it be easier?

I'm not sure why you're connecting to the share with a different username. Cached passwords are a major security hole. They are also inconvenient when your users do change their passwords; you have to go back and change all the cached passwords. Wouldn't it be easier to give the logon username access to the shared resource instead of using additional credentials?

Are you logging on locally as a member of a workgroup, or are you logging on to a domain?

Printers

I believe, default to "everyone" can print and "creator" can manage their documents, so that may be why the printers work.

I agree with Palmetto on the mapped drives.
