Mapping a drive Dialing a threw VPN

By orosas ·
I am dialing from a win2k pro SP3. When I dial my ISP, then use a vpn connection to dial into an nt 4.0 server. I try mapping a drive and It never finds the share. I get an error message "The remote computer is not available" I am able to ping that server and also bring up my email. Is there a way to configure what port is uses when mapping a drive. Currently is using port 445 and I would like to change it to port 139??? Help

It sound like a NetBIOS issue to me. On the VPN connection in NETWORK AND DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS, add WINS servers to the TCP/IP properties by:

1) Right-click the VPN connection and choose propeties.
2) Click the NETWORKING tab.
3) Double-click INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP).
4) Do not change anthing on the GENERAL tab but click ADVANCED.
5) Click the WINS tab.
6) Click the ADD button and add the IP address of your network WINS server(s).
7) Click on all of the OK buttons to make your way out of the maze and give it a try.

You could also use an LMHOSTS file in you c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc directory. There is a samle there called lmhosts.sam.

Hope this works for you.
Cheers!
