boot from floppy if possible! Assuming you are not running dual boot stuff and using a win98 emergency boot disk you can use the fdisk /mbr to place a generic boot sector onto the c: drive.

WARNING: REPLACING THE MASTER BOOT SECTOR WHEN YOU HAVE MULTIPLE PARTIONS WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON SUBSEQUENT PARTITIONS. ie the whole disk will become 1 partition ready to be formally partitioned.

To prevent the mbr from being written to, you can use the bios mbr virus protection option in most current op systems. To use this feature, install your operating system(s) then go into the bios and turn on boot sector protection. Another protective action would be to use the program getmbr and restmbr available from the net to make a back-up of the mbr so that if catastrophie hits you can simply restore the mbr.

Viruses can be removed from the mbr and bad mbr can be fixed only one way! replace the mbr with generic then use fdisk to redue the partitions. Note : never warm boot if you have a virus and are trying to fix mbr stuff. Always power down pc right after fixing mbr and restart from totally off position (10 min wait before repower)
