Master browser questions in NT4.0

by chad dykstra . Updated 24 years, 5 months ago

I have a couple of questions about the way master browser works and what I can do about it…if you go to the server manager and go ‘select domain’ there are 3 or 4 ‘domains’ in there that are not actually there. Not a huge deal in itself, but it is causing me a problem. I have a server that was set up in a workgroup with 2 words (for example ‘work group’ – this was before my time…). I am trying to change this server to be a member server on our domain, but I’m getting an error saying it is already a domain controller trying to join it with our domain.

I’m assuming this is due to the fact the computer is in a workgroup with 2 words (is this invalid?) so it uses the server name as a workgroup (or something regulated by WINS..) by default and thinks it is a master browser on that domain.

If I select that domain, it shows no controller available and it is empty.

My question is this – how do I stop that server from thinking it is a master browser and bringing it on the domain? I have already tried changing the workgroup to something else with no success. As a secondary question, there are lists in our domain list of servers that are not even there anymore – not many but a few. How do I go about removing those from the list?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Chad
