I have a compaq system with 4 500MHz Xeon processors with NT server(stand alone). Is this too much? what is the maximum number of processors that NT server can support?

Hiya, according to Microsoft (and previous training), Windows NT 4 Server can support systems upto 4 processors. Have a glance of the following when you can (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/architec/8_ar_ts_8dbn.asp)

Hope this helps

You can check the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\RegisteredProcessors to see how many processors your version of Windows supports. This registry key value is informational only. In other words, changing the value to 128 won't enable your version of Windows to support 128 processors!

I've encountered situations that it's possible for 8 or more processors. Depending on the used hardware. You then need the software drivers from the manufacturer of the used system.

Actually, a better question to ask would be whether or not NT4 can make effective use of those 4 processors. In my experience, the answer is usually "no".

Win2k might turn out to be a more appropriate OS for your system. Thanks to the fairly welldesigned disk and memory subsystems Compaq Proliants make damn good Exchange servers, even with Xeon 500's in them.

Technically speaking though, the number of processors in NT4 Enterprise Edition and Win2k Advanced Server is limited to 8. The standard editions are limited to 4. With a vendor supplied HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) the limit is a lot higher (32 in several cases, although you won't find many of these servers on the market).
