Maximising Win98 TCP/IP Settings

By simon.west35 ·
I understand that in Win98 the TCP/IP packet size is not maximised for speed by default! Could someone please advise on how to maximise any settings so that i get the best from my dial up connection?

Thanx Simon

Open up your modem properties and on general you should see max speed. Slide bar max it from there.
Push Ok to close, Now said that there's really nothing else that can be done with 56k connection because it can only handle so much and also dependson your phone line and your isp.

You can tweak your settings but then it might make more problems then you really need. There's no tweak for uploads on 56k,cable modems. But tweaks for downloads on all types of internet connections.

Most common problems if you tweak is if your under 32mb ram, 64 mb ram, tweak settings uses more memory to run. Pc locks up alot also. That's all I can say bud good luck.

It sounds like you may be referring to the MTU size. I doubt you will see much difference in this, but here is some of the information on it just in case.

call you internet service provider and ask them for the DNS numbers. click on tcp/ip settings and instead of having server assigned name server addresses, select specifiy name server addresses. Then insert their numbers in the primary and secondary dns boxes. Click ok, then reboot.

well we all want faster speeds, but alas its the old phone lines they will only put out so much, here in Australia 28 is the max no matter how fast I run my modem settings, other option is broadband, thats fast but you have to pay for it or dsl. etc
