Maximum Hard Drive Partition Size

By jhigginsy ·
What is the maximum hard drive partition size that Windows 98SE operating system will support? I just purchased IBM deskstar 60Gig/DMA 100/7200RPM hard drive.

Thanks,
Jon

Windows 98Se uses FAT32 which can support drives up to 2 TB. I think you are covered. However if later you upgrade to XP or Windows 2k it is recomended (by Microsoft) that you use NTFS for drives over 32 GB.

As mentioned in the previous answer, Windows 98SE will have no trouble supporting the size drive you have (and ones much larger).

But I would ask you what applications you are using. In particular, are you going to use your computer for any video work? If so, then Windows 98/ME is not a good choice.

Although Win 9x/ME can handle the large size drives, file sizes are another matter entirely. The maximum size for a file in Win9x/ME is 4.2Gig. For most work that size limitation is no problem. However, that is a small video file--only about 15 minutes of full quality video (for example, from a digital camcorder). That's fine for commercials and very short videos, but becomes a serious limitation very quickly with video. (I just edited a vacation video that ended up as 80 minutes long....and a 17 gig file.)

If you expect to be working with video editing or know of some other application or database you are or will be using for which the 4 gig file size limitation will be a problem, I'd suggest moving to either Windows XP or Windows 2000 and using NTFS file system.

No problem with win98 handling the hard drive with fat32. The only issue I see is with the motherboard bios.....is it current enough to see anything past the 7.8 gig barrier?
Good luck!

Mike
