Maximum length of Cat 5 run

By conjh13 ·
We have an Ethernet LAN, but we have one small issue. Our LAN setup is as follows: internet router -> Ethernet switch -> Ethernet -> fiber converter -> fiber converter -> Ethernet hub -> Ethernet hub -> Ethernet switch -> workstation. All of the wiring is Cat 5 wire (excluding the fiber of course). The workstation in this question is having problems connecting. The wire from this workstation to the switch is approximately 75 feet in length. The problem is, this workstation cannot find the network on this cable. It did manage to find it's workgroup on one occasion after many minutes of searching. We do know the workstation is in excellent condition, as we had it on a shorter run temporarily. Also, through proccess of elimination, we have determined the wire is the only problem. Our question: is this wire leading to the workstation too long in this application?

The issue may indeed point to the cable - but not the LENGTH of the cable. The maximun "recommended" length for CAT5 is about 100 meters, or 328 feet.

You may have a bad RJ45 connector on one end or the other; you may have a bad patch panel connection; or you may have a bad port in a switch or hub.

But the length (75 feet) of your cat5 cable is well within recommended lengths.

Good luck,

Maxwell

P.S. You may also simpy have a kink in the existing cable, or it may be damaged in some other way.

Good Luck,

for twisted pair the maximum lenght is 185 meter (you did not specify which type are cabeling you are using to the workstation.

you can use whatis.com to find the information you need.
other possible options are broken cable, or broken connectors, wrong pinlayout. replace the cable with a known good one.
Also possible is that the jack at the hub/switch itself is bad.

Leopold

It may be a cable problem, but most likely if the main problem you're having is using Network Neighborhood (finding computers, workgroups) or logging in, you may need to troubleshoot a little more.

Do you have link lights on both the PC and end device (all devices in between)?

If running IP, can you ping other workstations?
