What's the maximun RAM permited on WIN 9X system?
I've 640MB installed.
During the 1st boot after a clean install, it shows 640MB but after the subsiquent reboot, the General tab of the system property shows only 639MB.

Maximum RAM on WIN 9X system

by tlippert In reply to Maximum RAM on WIN 9X sys ...

I have seen many computers misreport the amount of memory in a system. It has to do with kilobytes and megabytes and the conversion of it. "Computer math" Just like looking at your hard drive size. Win9x shows two numbers in the properties sheet of a hard drive. One place that memory can go is if you have an on board video card. This memory is shared and can show less than installed. I wouldn't worry about the fact that it is only missing 1 meg.

The thing I would worry about is having too much memory. I can't remember which web site i read it on but it said too much is bad. The amount was 512 MB. Microsoft says that a win9x system can used 2 GB. The problems that can be created with too much memory are corrupted files and GPF's.

Theoretically Microsoft stated that Win98 would support 512MB of ram,and that 128mb would be the suggested amount before encountering any problems.
Your computer is reporting the the correct amount, once programs are installed you have virtual memory that is automatically set by windows that does not show up as available memory.

Also if you have one of those onboard video cards it may be taking some of it.

You have to manually set the maxfilecache size in system.ini to 512MB. See this page from microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q253/9/12.ASP

This doesn't affect your inquiry about showing less RAM. That issue is from something using RAM upon bootup. Systems with integrated video will allocate some to the video card. Your description sounds like something in config.sys or autoexec.bat. TSRs will use RAM that is not available to windows and thus won't be reported. This is really nothing to worry about when you have that much RAM, but I would make the SYSTEM.INI setting change made earlier or some programs are not going to run.

The SYSTEM.INI part did solve the problem on the read out after the full boot. Thanks.

Greetings,

I'm going to throw a curve ball into your question and the answers received so far. I've heard - but I cannot confirm - that a Windows 95 machine can use ONLY a maximum of 128 MB RAM, and that a Windows 98 machine can use ONLY a maximum of 512 MB. That's not to say that one couldn't install more than that, 256 MB in a Win95, for example, and the computer's BIOS and Windows itself will detect that it's there, but for all practical purposes the software has a limited capability to UTILIZE only the amounts I mentioned - 128 MB for Win95 and 512 MB for Win98.

I tried to search Microsoft TechNet for verification, but it was nowhere to be found. The following article, however, could probably be a great help in managing the memory in your computer(s).

(REMOVE SPACES if they snuck into the pasted URL.)

It is the Vcache setting and the MaxiPageFile in the INI file.
Thanks.
