Maxtor hard drive failures

By cedar ·
Hello,

I work for a company that has seen many of the Maxtor hard drives fail recently. 20gb slimlines and most recently 40gb 5400rpm 2mb failures. The symptoms are as follows- drive because increasingly noisy - often right out of the box- and then eventually will not boot at all. The noise sounds like a bearing noise. We've had a bout 80 of these fail. Question: has anyone else out there experienced a high rate of failure with 20gb and 40gb Maxtor hard drives?

Thanks in advance, I am trying to find documentation for a report on the drive failures.

Maxtor has gone to the tubes in the last year or so.

I use IBM, and Western Digital.

By the way Maxtor and Quantum have merged.

Good Luck Lee

in all seriousness maxtor/quantum and ibm harddrives are no good anymore. the old quantums were reliability to a T however maxtor has recently had several issues with large batches being recalled and harddrives dieing. IBM have proven to be duds toothe deskstar range earnt the name deathstar for several reasons and the symptoms you have expressed are exactly what happen. I personally only buy western digital and seagate drives now. I would buy seagate for minimal noise
