Mcafee Viruscan and Windows 95

By Pickle ·
We have a number of PC's running Windows 95 and Mcafee Viruscan 4.51 SP1 that are having conflicts. At first machines would Blue Screen with and error in MCSCAN32.vxd when the user would open a word or excel document. Then found it also happens simply logging in and moving files. Updating MDAC and Jet engine helped but haven't elimated the problem. Short of Disabling Viruscan haven't found a solution and Network Associates haven't came up with a solution either. Any ideas?

Mcafee Viruscan and Windows 95

Mcafee Virus Scan has been known to not get along well with other programs that are pre-loaded in your system tray on your Windows95 machines. Do you use any terminal programs? Such as IBM Client Access, or Secure-CRT? My suggestion would be to update all the Windows95 machines to as far as they can go in the MS update world...at: (windowsupdate.microsoft.com). If you are getting Blue Screens of Death at first when starting up, you are definately having conflicts with a startup program. Sometimes, cautiosly, you have to go into the registry after a clean un-install of Mcafee and manually remove any instances of "Mcafee" That Mcscan32.vxd is the the virtual device driver for your (Blue/Red Shield) that is always in the system tray....it itself can always be tweaked to have different scan settings while using the Win95 machine.

Best of Luck!

I should have added that some of these machines are on an NT4 network with very little in the system tray. The problemhas only recently surfaced. especially after updating the dat files.

Hi. We had a debacle with McAfee 4.51 and Windows 95. We have found no way to make McAfee 4.51 work with Windows 95 on our older machines, and have reverted to using 4.03 with the most recent dat files. We have approx 1500 workstations running Win95. The newer machines, Compaq EN6400s, appear to work ok, but the older machines, Compaq DP2000s and DP4000s, and AST Bravo 5200s blue screen on a regular basis with McAfee 4.51. Try running 4.03 with the latest dat file.

Make sure you are running the latest Scan Engine version, 4.1.6.0
I had problems with users using more recent DATs but having older engines.
You can get the weekly SuperDAT, which upgrades the DAT files to the most recent AND it also upgrades the Scan Engine to the most recent version. Go here to get this:
ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/4.x/sdat4210.exe
(remove any spaces)

That is a link to the latest SuperDAT. Run it and see if that helps. Reboot a system, have Mcafee start up, then run the SuperDAT.

hope this helps

Were the W95 stations upgraded from an older version of McAfee, there is often a problem removing the old version giving vxd errors. obtain the "Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility" (msicu.exe). You will also find info on this at McAfee.
We do not have Win95 stations but cannot run this version on NT 3.51, so the answer above (version 4.03)may be the correct way to go if the msicu doesn't work.
Do not remove protection even if you have to use another brand, too many viruses around!

The machines were on version 4.03 and we were using the superdats that were updating the engine. All are on the 4.1.60 engine and seem to have the problem after running the superdat update. No problems at all on WIN98 machines just the 95 machines.

Yes we use ZAC (Zero Administration Client) and that is lately what causes the problem to happen on newly affected machines.
