ME/scandisk

By jon_w31 ·
Scandisk will not run under windows ME. It starts and the stops after about 10 seconds. No matter how long it is left. Closing all running apps makes no difference. However rerstarting in safe mode allows scandisk to run ok?
Any suggestions
Thanks

It does run under all OSes; the problem is that nothing else can be writing to the hdd at any time during the scandisk process. Any write activity will throw scandisk into a "contents have changed... restarting" and 10 times it gives up retrying.

You have to stop all network activity ; all anti-virus checking ; ANYTHING that writes to the hdd.

The fact that you can run it successfully in safe mode, means that your scandisk is fine... it just won't work completely when something else is running and changing hdd contents.

There are programs running beyond what is shown in the taskbar. Have you run msconfig and selective startup and then the startup tab, uncheck everything except systray and explorer? Those are the only two programs that windows requires in order to operate.
