Media Player for Win95

By mckay_w ·
Is it possible to download one of the latest Windows Media Players for WIndows 95, or is 95 only compatible with the one that comes with it.
In the Add/Remove Programs Box, it says it has Media Player 6.4, but when u open it, it looks like 2 or something.

Media Player for Win95

by Gary McP In reply to Media Player for Win95

The executable for Windows media player is called mplayer2.exe. This may be the cause of the confusion, but when you open it and go to Help, About, the version is 6.4. (so why didn't they call it mplayer6.exe?? I don't know).

Media player 7.1 is the latest version, but requires Win 98. Version 6.4 seems to be the last one supported for win95.

Hope this helps,
Gary

Windows Media Player 9 was released 9/24/2002 -- it is in BETA (Win95 is NOT supported/recommended and it probably will not work on your system).

What you have is the proper version for Win95. Media Player 6.4 for Win95 and for WinNT. It looks older because your OS is older.

You do not give your system specifications... if you meet the minimum memory and megahertz requirements for version 7.1 (go to allmedia player downloads and checkout the Win98 version)... it won't hurt to try it.

But at best, in your situation, I'd try the 7.1 version that is available for download at the above site (that says for Win98 but again, if you meet the minimum requirements, then you might give that version a try). I would not recommend version 9 with your computer.

Media player version 6.4 was the last version released for use on W95.

However, you may be able to accomplish an update by performing a custom update of IE, and making sure that Media player is selected.

If you are having a problem with some media files, I suggest you try Winamp www.winamp.com

It may take care of your problems, and is less system intrusive than Media Player or Real Player.
