a codec is a coder - decoder . The audio has to be converted into digital form and put into a predefined form . When you get this predefined form your player needs the decoder for it to decode it into audio and play . For different predefined forms there are different file format and codecs . The player has to have this "plug in" . No audio device error is a hardware or software driver error . Check your sound card and reinstall its drivers.

Actually while you are at it I would try looking at the makers Web Site and see if there are new Drivers for your Sound Card download them and install them it might be a problem with a Windows Patch causing your Sound Drivers to no longer work so some upgraded sound drivers should cure this. Of course if you have no sound Card or built on M'Board Sound or it has been disabled in BIOS you are being told that you don't have a sound output device.
