Media Player won't play .wmv files

By jeremy ·
I was trying to help a friend with a problem on his XP Home system. His windows media player will play mpeg files, but when you double-click a .wmv file you hear a ding and the program doesnt show up. If you try to play a .wmv file on a web browser, it plays the audio but the video is just black. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling windows media player, and also installing the newest version, but nothing works. There's a couple of Dunhill cigars in it for me if I can get it to work. Any possible suggestions on what might fix this problem? Let me know, thanks.

You need to download the correct codec for the player. You can get these on Microsoft's site or by running a search for .wmv codecs for the version of WMP you are using.

You probably don't have the correct codecs. Check here for downloading and installing:

P.S. I like Dunhills too!

You can use vista codec or use media player plugins to play your .wmv files. If not you use other player. If you want to play that file into media player, you have to re-install your operating system. Don't worry, this is not a serious problem.
